Laparoscopic prostatectomy
Prostate carcinoma is the most frequent malignant tumor in males. Today, through the help of improved diagnostic procedures and methods of early diagnosis, this tumor can be cured in most cases – requiring an operation that completely removes the prostate.
The prostate can be removed using different forms of open surgery, but nowadays also by using laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. In this procedure, five small incisions provide access for medical instruments to remove the prostate in a vessel sparing and precise fashion, minimizing the risk of postoperative incontinence and impotence.
The operation usually takes about two hours and is performed under general anesthesia. The average length of the hospital stay is about six days. The small staples that close the wound are removed 10 days after surgery.
